How to Mix and Match Wallpaper with Fabric

Emily Hartley

When it comes to interiors, mixing and matching wallpaper with fabric can create a beautiful and cohesive look that elevates the entire room. However, it can also be a bit daunting, especially if you're unsure how to balance colours, patterns, and textures. The good news is, with a little guidance and creativity, you can effortlessly blend our patterned wallpaper and fabric for a stylish, harmonious space.

Find Complementary Colour Palettes

One of the most important aspects of mixing wallpaper and fabric is ensuring the colours complement each other. Look for a shared colour between the wallpaper and the fabric, which can create a cohesive flow between the two. If your wallpaper has a pattern with multiple hues, choose a fabric that picks up on one or two of those colours.

Tip: For example, mixing the neutral backdrop of our Creeping Toadflax wallpaper with its leafy green print along with the more condensed green pattern of Maidenhair fabric to create a cohesive pairing.

Mixing Patterns with Purpose

When it comes to patterns, the key is to mix them in a way that feels intentional, not chaotic. If your wallpaper has a bold or busy print, balance it out with simpler fabrics. Alternatively, if the fabric you’ve chosen has a delicate or small-scale pattern, pairing it with a more prominent wallpaper can work beautifully.

Tip: Play with the scale of the patterns or draw from the colours to tie the patterns together.

Consider Texture

Texture can be just as important as colour and pattern when mixing wallpaper and fabric. Combining different textures adds richness and depth to a room. The interplay between these textures will create a dynamic, multi-dimensional space.

Use Accessories to Tie It All Together

Sometimes, the easiest way to tie the look together is through accessories. Adding throw pillows, cushions, lampshades or curtains in coordinating fabrics will help create continuity between the wallpaper and the fabric. It’s also an opportunity to introduce a secondary pattern or texture that complements both.

Tip: If you're feeling bold, try adding patterned cushions that blend elements of the wallpaper, or use solid-coloured accessories that pick up the primary colour from the wallpaper and fabric.

Test Before You Commit

Mixing and matching wallpaper with fabric can feel risky, but it doesn’t have to be. Before committing to a particular combination, try sampling small swatches of both your wallpaper and fabric together in the room. This will allow you to see how the colours, patterns, and textures work in the actual space and ensure they complement each other as you envisioned.

Tip: Move the fabric and wallpaper samples around the room in different lighting conditions to get a sense of how they’ll look at various times of the day. Sometimes natural light can change how colours appear.
