Cotswold Cottage by Uns Hobbs

Uns Hobbs and her team focus on creating practical and timeless interiors, through the clever use of colour, pattern and textures. Recently they worked on a country cottage in the Cotswolds where the clients enlisted their help in creating a brighter, more spacious home for their family and pets. We were delighted when they decided to use our Creeping Toadflax wallpaper in one of the bedrooms, so we caught up with Uns Hobbs to find out more about the project.

Tell us about the inspiration for the Cotswolds Cottage interior…

The Cotswolds cottage was a small house with low ceilings and dark, awkward corners. We were tasked with working alongside the architect to extend the space and infuse it with character, warmth, and color. Our inspiration came from the surrounding countryside and the changing seasons. Now, the cottage is filled with vibrant hues and patterns, featuring rich, warm autumnal tones of mustard and red, uplifting greens, and strong natural shades.

We love how you effortlessly layer pattern and texture. What’s the secret to achieving this look?

I love layering different patterns, colors, and textures, and I'm not afraid to mix them. Combining florals with geometric patterns or stripes, and mixing small prints with large-scale ones, can create dimension and a layered look. Trying to match everything isn't always the answer; I believe a winning scheme is often one that is unexpected and a bit braver. Most clients find this challenging, so it's always a joy when a client embraces a scheme you know will look amazing.

What’s your relationship with wallpaper like, and how do you utilize it to enhance a space?

I adore wallpaper and couldn't do my job without it. The power of wallpaper to transform a space is phenomenal. It can elevate any room and soften hard edges. Recently, I've been working on new builds, where the challenge is often how to add character. My go-to solution is wallpaper because it adds so much charm, especially in spaces without traditional features, like loft conversions or new builds.

We are so thrilled that you selected our Creeping Toadflax wallpaper for the bedroom. Why do you feel it was the correct fit for the space?

The Cotswolds cottage is set among beautiful English countryside, and we wanted to bring some of that outside beauty inside. Creeping Toadflax was exactly what we were looking for, as its natural, sweeping leaf pattern feels organic rather than repetitive. The soft cream background complements the house's overall scheme, and the colors within the print are beautiful. Our client fell in love with the print, but we had to convince her partner to extend it over the ceiling. We're so glad he agreed because the end result feels like sleeping in nature, under the trees. We paired the print with Celestial Blue by Little Green on the built-in cupboards and woodwork—a nod to the sky and an uplifting color that complements the paper beautifully.
